IOD Special Talk - The Board's Role in Sustainability Development

An Auto Industry perspective

Let me start with Isuzu Group Ikigai (with a larger purpose in sustainable mobility):

Isuzu's purpose is "moving the world-for you." Isuzu has a mission of “creating a better life with better transport” and a vision of “advancing the world as an innovative leader with 'Reliability x Creativity'

Boards need to define the clear purpose of their organisation, with a vision and mission encompassing sustainable development.

Isuzu Group is committed to the sustainability development goals of the United Nations, and it has signed up for 8 out of 17 SGDs. It will achieve a net zero objective by 2045 globally for all plants and products.

In a rapidly advancing world, sustainable mobility has become the lifeline of economic progress and social development. Yet, the way we move ahead is having significant repercussions on our environment, our health, and our future. To realize the vision of Viksit Bharat, we must rethink and reinvent our approach not only to sustainable mobility but also for any other business in which each organisation is involved. Sustainable development is not merely an option; it is the cornerstone of a progressive and resilient India.

Boards need to define clear key performance indicators (KPIs) for sustainable development goals and monitor their progress in every board meeting. These company goals must be deployed in each function of the organisation and reported to the board with the progress of the company KPIs.

Sustainable development is about creating an ecosystem that is efficient, inclusive, and eco-friendly. It means prioritizing greener initiatives and integrating innovative technologies for a smarter and greener world

Today, as we stand on the threshold of a new era, it is imperative that the board not only focus on domestic markets but also unlock the global potential and shape the future of Bharat. Our nation, with its rich cultural heritage, diverse population, and burgeoning economy, holds immense promise on the global stage.

Isuzu Motors India is proud to export over 80% of its make in India produce to global markets in GCC countries and nearby countries. Isuzu also sells the same products to domestic markets, which focus on global quality at a competitive price.

To realize the vision of Viksit Bharat, we must rethink and reinvent our approach not only to sustainable mobility but also to every business in which an organisation is involved.

Additionally, the board must encourage inclusivity and diversity in all aspects of society. By empowering women, minorities, and marginalised communities, we can unlock new perspectives and drive innovation forward. Everyone deserves a seat at the table, and by fostering a culture of inclusivity, we can tap into the full potential of our nation. Isuzu Motors India employs 20% women, which is the largest in the Indian EV industry.

Furthermore, each organisation must embrace sustainable practices and prioritize environmental conservation. As stewards of this planet, it is our responsibility to protect its resources for future generations. By adopting green technologies and promoting eco-friendly initiatives, the board can pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable future for Bharat and the world.

Finally, the board should encourage engagement with the global community, forging partnerships and alliances that will enable us to thrive in an interconnected world. By collaborating with other nations and sharing knowledge and resources, we can address common challenges and seize shared opportunities.

In conclusion, to unlock the global potential and shape the future of 'Viksit Bharat', boards need to set bold visions and take decisive actions. The unwavering commitment of boards must not only set these agendas but also monitor their progress in every board meeting.

Together, the board should enable a journey towards a brighter tomorrow, where every individual has the opportunity to flourish and Bharat takes its rightful place on the world stage
