Ambassador Sudhir, Mr. Nath, Dr. Lall, Your Excellencies, Distinguished Guests and Speakers, Members and Friends of the Institute of Directors, India, Ladies and Gentlemen.
I am delighted to be with you this morning at your annual UAE Global Convention focusing this year on Leadership for Business Excellence and Innovation. My participation here today, and for the past ten years, is a testament to the long-standing friendly relations between India and the United Arab Emirates. The relationship between our two countries is deeply rooted in shared values and aspirations for a world of peace, stability, and prosperity. India and the UAE have similar non-aggressive strategies for progress, development, and coexistence in all corners of the world. We share a strong desire for international dialogue and exchange. Both our countries work together to strengthen our political, economic, commercial, and cultural relations with each other.
I am pleased this morning to be among friends who understand these common bonds and share the conviction that India and the United Arab Emirates are linked together by a mutually cooperative and productive relationship. I personally follow with great interest and admiration India's significant economic and social progress. I applaud the country's continued positive role in world affairs. I commend the energy and dedication of the Indian people in bringing peace and progress to India and the world.
At the same time, we are very proud of the advances that the United Arab Emirates continues to make in all spheres of life. Under the enlightened leadership of the President, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE is an integral part of the global economy. It has earned renown as an excellent environment for investments and businesses to succeed and flourish. His Highness, the President, as you will gather in your sessions at this convention, pays particular attention to the finance community, infrastructure, economic development, sustainability, culture and tourism, as well as inspiring and empowering all citizens and residents of the country. In regard to all of these subjects, we recognize that we do not operate in a national vacuum, that our actions can affect countries beyond our borders, and that we can benefit from adopting the world's best practices. The wise leadership of His Highness the President has made the United Arab Emirates a country of progress, prosperity, and stability.

Your concern at this convention today Leadership for Business Excellence and Innovation is important to the continued enhancement of business competitiveness and success. Today, our businesses are improved by innovation and they also depend on continued innovation. Our businesses are global and they depend on the communication and transportation systems that link them together. Today, our businesses are characterized by complex partnerships with other businesses, organisations, and government agencies, and they depend on partners to fulfill their roles with innovation and without interruption. These complex relationships provide power for businesses, and they also require leadership that ensures that these businesses participate in, and take advantage of, all useful innovations and developments that impact their operations.

We in the UAE greatly appreciate the importance of business leadership. We strongly believe that anyone who is, or aspires to be, a business leader should seek to be held accountable and should embrace the principles of integrity and transparency. Successful business leaders must understand the business environment. And, as in any pursuit, they must commit to sound planning, and have the patience and commitment that are critical components of a thriving business venture. Successful business leaders must maintain the ability to accept reality while understanding the need for change. They must also understand their important role in enriching the societies in which they operate. The operations, practices, ethics, and attitudes of successful business leaders must have relevance to their communities' values and needs. Successful business leaders must appreciate the importance of engagement in societal issues not only for the benefit of their companies, but also for the common good.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
There is no doubt that current world economic developments have created new opportunities for us in India and the UAE to continue to work together. As the world changes, so must we. Our growing business and economic linkages can contribute to greater participation and influence in the global economy for our mutual benefit.
Let me close by congratulating Dr. Vivek Lall on receiving this year's Golden Peacock Award. Dr. Lall has demonstrated exceptional skills, compassion, and leadership in infusing his business with excellence and vigor through innovation. We admire him particularly for the moral sense that marks his achievements. I also extend a warm welcome to all participants in this convention from abroad. Your work here highlights the fact that our future success depends on our ability to innovate and create new knowledge, new technologies, and new opportunities for working together. Success depends on leadership, which helps build relationships and strengthen cooperation at all levels.
Thank you again for the opportunity to address you today. I thank Lt. Gen. Surinder Nath, and all IOD leaders and members, as well as all who worked so diligently to convene this excellent meeting. I wish you great success in your sessions and I look forward to continued growth and diversification in our economic and business relations.
