Evening Workshop on

Smart Cities Mission - Accountancy Capacity Building

Wednesday, 14th Dec 2016 at Hotel Eros International, New Delhi

Cities around the world are growing at an incredible rate, with well over six billion people predicted to live in them by 2050. We will need better connected smart cities with integrated urban facilities, to meet the demands of the future. This will require the adoption of best practice across a range of areas such as engineering design, architecture, waste management, the digital economy, accountancy and finance, legal services and healthcare.

Smart Cities Mission is an urban renewal and retrofitting program by the Government of India, to develop 100 cities all over the country that are highly technologically advanced with digital infrastructure and communications, in addition to being citizen friendly and sustainable. This is an initiative that could change the face of the nation.

India’s Smart Cities Mission is part of a wider set of initiatives such as Skill India and Digital India which along with recent moves like demonetisation, are all part of the government’s efforts to improve governance, skills and productivity.

A key tool for realising these improvements is the accountancy community. In order to discuss & debate the role of professional accountants in smart cities, the Institute Of Directors jointly with Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI) is organising an evening workshop on Wednesday, 14th December, 2016, in New Delhi.

This report explores the rationale and trends shaping smart cities globally – which has been related to the Indian context to reflect on the role of accountants, effective leadership and financial management, and to suggest recommendations for the path ahead.

The event will feature a range of eminent panellists from different fields, to create a diverse set of views and ensure a stimulating discussion with a solution oriented mind-set.
